Students are comfy all over the room with blankets and pillows for about 12 minutes of independent reading right now. That is pretty remarkable for this point in the year! They get "cozy" and get reading which is great for their stamina and for me to be able to read with friends and teach each child one on one exactly where they are. Some students are just learning that there are words to look at while others are starting to use beginning sounds to figure out words and that is OK! We will all be readers when we leave and in the mean time I get to do what I love most - helping children fall in love with reading!
Writing time is when our room explodes with buzz - students have become great illustrators, this is the first year I have tried setting students free to write without a prompt and without my help to "write" their thinking. They have to do it themselves and the outcome is amazing. They are telling detailed stories all in pictures and they are writing the whole time. How exciting!
Math has stretched our conversation skills, students are learning to describe differences and similarities, develop their thinking and show numbers 1-7. Our work in math goes from the rug to seats and back every day and involves talking, showing, writing, and modeling. We are truly mathematicians.
Class Dojo is a great tool if you aren't signed up yet please do! It is a way to message me at any time of day and it even translates messages in multiple languages. I share photos and updates often and use it for reminders and requests as well. Plus you can see your child's progress daily.
